The State of our State


John Neal kicks off the show to talk stocks with chief along with sharing his stock of the day. Kevin Riordan and Kathy Dervin join us in studio to make sense of these wacky markets before we take off for the weekend. Lastly, Illinois State Senator Matt Murphy joins us on the phone to talk abou the budget impasse and Governor Rauner’s 2016 State of the State address.

Kevin Riordan

Director of Research, Capital Trading Group

Kevin Riordan began his career in the futures industry in 1984, working his way through Loyola University while on the floor of the Chicago Board of Trade. Kathy Dervin

Kathy Dervin has been with Stocks & Jocks since 2011 as our Friday morning contributor, producer and banking guru. She has worked in the financial markets industry since 1993, including PC Quote/HyperFeed 1993 to 2003 and Thomson Reuters 2003 to 2013. She is currently Vice President at an investment bank. Matt Murphy

State Senator Matt Murphy was elected to the Illinois Senate in November 2006 and quickly established his legislative priorities upon his arrival in Springfield. He’s a tireless advocate for balanced budgets, job growth and the return of honest and ethical government to Springfield.

Senator Murphy was appointed to be the Senate Republican Deputy Leader in January 2013, after first serving as the Senate Republican Caucus Chair.  He has also served as the co-chairman of the Senate’s Deficit Reduction Committee and served on the Illinois Senate Special Committee on Impeachment Procedures that established the protocols for former Governor Rod Blagojevich’s tribunal, which led to his historic removal from office.

In the Senate, Senator Murphy serves as the Minority Spokesperson of the Executive and Appropriations I Committees, and sits on the Appropriations II, Energy, and Revenue Committees.

The Senator is actively engaged in his community, serving as the co-chairman of the Northwest Suburban Alliance on Domestic Violence and on the executive boards for the Palatine Park District Foundation, and Preservation of Human Dignity, Women in Need Growing Stronger Board.

A native of Mount Prospect, he attended St. Viator High School in Arlington Heights. He is an alumnus of the University of Iowa, and graduated from John Marshall Law School in 1996 with a Juris Doctor. Currently, Sen. Murphy is a practicing attorney with Brian J. McManus & Assoc. in Chicago.

He and his wife, Julie, reside with their four children, Erin, Molly, Kevin, and Colleen in Palatine.

The 27th  Senate District includes the communities of Arlington Heights, Barrington, Des Plaines, Hoffman Estates, Inverness, Mt. Prospect, Palatine, Prospect Heights, and Rolling Meadows.
