Good morning. The SPY finished the week down .24 (call it flat) after having some wild moves on Wednesday and Thursday. A rally early in the week culminated in a Wednesday high of 129.81, only to sell off to a Thursday low of 126.19 before bouncing back strongly (after yet another announcement of impending settlement in Greece) to a Thursday close of 128.30. Based on the strength of that bounce you might have thought the rally would continue, but you would have been mistaken, or at least early.

Good morning. The market retreated a little last week as people headed to the malls for what most prognosticators predict will be a solid holiday buying season. The SPY finished down 1.39 (1.2%) to close at 118.80, almost all of which happened during the half-day session on Black Friday. What was supposed to be a sleepy day turned out to be just that, a sleepy day, except the market opened down around 1% and stayed right there until the close.

Good morning. Negative week for the market last week, with the SPY’s finishing down 2.87 to close at 121.73 (2.3%). The VIX had a huge move up of 32%, from 16.62 to 22.05. This followed some sliding markets overseas as mounting concerns of a major China real estate bubble continued, as well as the Central Banks in Europe limping towards a bailout of the debt ridden Greek economy.

Happy Columbus Day. Remember to feed the meters even though all public employees are enjoying a paid Holiday. More on that later. The market had a huge rebound week last week, and we are on the verge of totally forgetting that nasty, and ultimately forgettable to some, sell-off of the last two years. The SPY rallied from 102.49 to 107.26, a very large weekly move of 4.7%. The VIX was pummeled, starting the week at 28.68 and finishing 19% lower at 23.12. So we are to believe that not only is the market going straight up, and your investment in the market worth more, the insurance on the now higher value should be less. I thought the market was supposed to be rational?
