Frank Fahey: Market News for the Prepared Mind: 3.6-3.13.2017
March 6, 2017
“Chance favors the Prepared Mind.” – Louis Pasteur
“Sometimes paranoia’s just having all the facts.” – William S. Burroughs
“Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored.” – Aldous Huxley
“The market can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent.” John Keynes
The Dow Jones Industrials and the S&P 500 are up over 6% since New Year’s Day. The tech-laden NASDAQ 100 is up nearly 10.5% for the same period. The 2009-2017 bull market is the second longest in in history, surpassed on by the bull market running from 1987-2000. In absolute terms this bull market is the third strongest in history. The market rose 582% from 1987-2000 and 267% from 1949 to 1956. This long-term movement leaves the investor in the quandary of “What to do.”
After any major market move, it is a good idea to reassess your financial goals based on age, need, and risk tolerance.
Do not be afraid to adjust and re-balance.

Concerns about Trump’s speech before Congress led to a Tuesday close of 12.92. The VIX ended the week closing down at 4.45% or 0.51. This was the lowest closing low since February 14. The VXST – CBOE Short-term Volatility Index – show the largest decrease, 9.03%, among the various S&P 500 volatility indexes. Fears of March 15 parliamentary elections in the Netherlands and the April 21 beginning of the French Presidential election process were not reflected in pricing of VIX futures or related products. This could change at any moment. The ephemeral nature of fear and VIX pricing guarantee this.

There are just a few economic reports that will be released next week, but they do include one of the biggest – the U.S. Employment Situation report on Friday. Monday starts with Factory Orders followed by the Tuesday release of trade numbers. The focus changes to employment on Wednesday with the release of the ADP Employment Report. Employment remains the focus through Friday when February’s Employment Situation Report is released. The ECB will also release a statement after its regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday. January merchandise trade and industrial output will be released this coming week by a number of countries.
The wild card remains the US political climate. Google Trump and read the tweets from Donald Trump (@realDonaldTrump). His tweets have the capability of setting the tenor for an entire trading day.
The earnings season has entered the quiet time. This was the second straight ho-hum earnings season. It has been my experience that the post earnings behavior of individual stocks and the associated options usually show a remarkable consistency between individual earnings announcements in movement of the underlying and change in the implied volatility of the options. This consistency within individual stocks has not been apparent the past two earnings cycles. It is as if a “new normal” is being defined.
Earnings announcements are predictable volatility events providing trading opportunity. It is important to reduce the number of surprises which may occur in any trading campaign. Confirm the date and time of any company’s earnings announcement before trading any earnings announcement strategy. The most accurate source of this information is the company’s investor relations website.
I have added a scan of stocks with earnings announcements to the calendar for each day in the coming week. The scan criteria are: Closing price> $20, Implied Volatility > 25, Average daily option volume > 800 contracts. Liquidity, as determined by width of option markets and individual option contract volume, is a crucial component in successfully trading any option strategy. One of the most frustrating experiences is an inability to adjust or exit a strategy due to lack of liquidity in the market. The market uncertainty associated with the election has impacted liquidity. I found it difficult to enter earning trades last week. The bid/ask spreads seemed much larger than usual. Do not force trades in illiquid markets. Data Source for earnings: OptionVue8

The Dow Jones Industrials were up for the 11th straight day. The string of gains is the product of a string of small daily gains. Treasury yields move to their lowest levels in over 5 weeks. The VIX remains at levels showing little investor concern. Most of the indicators are decidedly bullish, yet I am wary. Over 30 years as a professional options trader has left me permanently wary.

THE VIX was down for the week. The March VIX future was down, while the April and May futures showed increases of over 6%. Russell Rhoads, CBOE VIX guru, pointed to the upcoming first round of the French presidential election as impetus for the strength of the April and May VIX futures. This strength was reflected in the VIX 3 month and 6 month Volatility Indexes. The VXV (CBOE 3 Month Volatility Index) was up 7.58%,

The first trading week of March does not end with the the employment situation report. Instead of the usual first Friday of the month, the Bureau of Labor Statistics won’t release employment figures for February until the following Friday, March 10.. The coming week includes reports on durable goods and the CoreLogic Case-Shiller Home Price Index. The absence of the monthly employment numbers will allow extra attention to other economic releases” Durable goods orders on Monday, the second estimate for fourth-quarter GDP will follow on Tuesday as will January trade data on goods, and Wednesday will see personal income & outlays. The week closes with the ISM non-manufacturing report.
The international focus is on Dutch Parliamentary elections on March 15 and the first round of the French presidential election on April 23. European investors are jittery.

Frank Fahey: Market News for the Prepared Mind: 2.20-2.27.2017
February 21, 2017
“Imagination decides everything.” – Blaise Pascal
“Chance favors the Prepared Mind.” – Louis Pasteur
“By definition, risk-takers often fail. So do morons. In practice it’s difficult to sort them out.” – Scott Adams
The trend continues. It was another new week of closing highs. Decent earnings, no major PR explosions from the White House, and optimism about potential tax reform are fueling the rise. I have been fighting a bronchial malaise, so I will keep it short this week.
Here is an overview of the US market behavior last week and for 2017:
| Index | 17-Feb | Change | % Weekly | 2016 YTD | Volatility of Index |

The VIX up this week while the various month VIX futures moved down. There is an intraday push and pull between SPX at all-time highs and the VIX futures and other short-term volatility indicators. The difference between the VIX and the RVX (RUT volatility index) collapsed last week. The previous week the difference was as high as 7.50. The difference closed last week at 3.68.
Starting February 13, the CBOE is not computing the VXN – the volatility index on the NDX or NASDAQ 100. The CBOE said it would start calculating the values at a future, as of yet, unannounced, date. No reasons were given.

The week of February 20 will be a shortened trading week due to President’s Day. Reports will be relased on existing and new home sales, along with the minutes of the Fed’s January meeting. The week winds up with the final consumer sentiment score for February, one that dipped back noticeably in early February.
The earnings season is starting to wind down. The earnings highlights this week, for widely held and actively traded stocks, are Tesla, Fitbit, Jack in the Box, HP, Cheesecake Factory, Trans Ocean, Public Storage, Popeyes, Toll Brothers. Ctrip, Hormel Foods, Baidu, Monster Beverage, Nordstrom, Foot Locker, and Priceline.
Data Sources for earnings: Livevol Core and OptionVue8

Frank Fahey: Market News for the Prepared Mind: 2.13-2.21.2017
February 13, 2017
“I love to talk about nothing. It’s the only thing I know anything about.”
― Oscar Wilde
“Imagination decides everything.” – Blaise Pascal
“The two most powerful warriors are patience and time.” – Leo Tolstoy
“Chance favors the Prepared Mind.” – Louis Pasteur
As of Fridays close, the S&P 500 had gone for 39 consecutive trading sessions without an intra-day move greater than 1%. This is the longest streak in history. The past few trading weeks summed up by the world’s oldest rock star, Tuli Kupferberg. in the Fug’s classic “Nothing.”
Monday, nothing
Tuesday, nothing
Wednesday and Thursday, nothing
Friday, for a change, a little more nothing
Saturday, once more, nothing
Sunday, nothing
Monday, nothing
Tuesday and Wednesday, nothing
Thursday, for a change, a little more nothing
Friday, once more, nothing.
The march of time may inexorable, but the market will not remain range bound. Patience is required by a trader waiting for something to occur in the markets. My first responsibility goal, as a trader, is to make sure I am not financially hurt by the next move in the market. Short term risk is the foundation for my position risk exposure. Success is not imperative on one’s ability to buy a bottom or sell a top.
Here is an overview of the US market behavior last week and for 2017:
| Index | 10-Feb | Change | % Weekly | 2016 YTD | Volatility of Index |
| Dow Jones Industrials (DJIA) | 20,269.27 | 197.81 | 0.99% | 2.56% | 10.98% (VXD) |
| S&P 500 (SPX) | 2,313.25 | 15.83 | 0.69% | 3.35% | 10.85% (VIX) |
| NASDAQ 100 (NDX) | 5,226.69 | 65.09 | 1.26% | 7.47% | 12.31% (VXN) |
| Russell 2000 (RUT) | 1,388.84 | 11.00 | 0.80% | 2.34% | 17.91% (RVX) |
| S&P 100 (OEX) | 1020.69 | 7.00 | 0.69% | 2.95% | 10.41% (VXO) |
| Crude Oil (CLH7) | 53.85 | 0.00 | 0.00% | -0.07% | 26.43%(OVX) |

The VIX is, also, part of the nothing movement in the markets. The price of the VIX reflects a market which has been extraordinarily quiet. The VIX and associated products have shown minimally lower volatility levels as the SPX moved up this week. The VIX has closed under 12 for 16 days. The VIX is at a significant support level. The major topic of conversation among traders is the question Chubby Checker asked in Limbo Rock; “How low can you go?” I have seen at-the- money index implied volatility with an “8” handle and as high as the 170’s. It should be noted that I saw both of these levels in the same year – 1987.
Trading activity in the VIX options pit has been divided between trades providing portfolio insurance and speculative risk reversals. The risk reversals have seen the purchase of call verticals which are financed through the sale of out-of-the money puts. CBOE TV airs several daily reports from the VIX pit. These reports are valuable in getting a flavor of the daily VIX trade – options and futures.
Here is an overview of last week for the VIX and related products:

It will be a very heavy week for economic news. The week starts with Janet Yellen’s semi-annual testimony before the Senate Banking Committee followed on Wednesday by her testimony before the House Financial Services Committee. Yellen’s testimony has the potential to break the streak of no daily 1% moves in the SPX. Reports on retail sales, consumer prices and industrial production will be released on Wednesday. Thursday’s highlight will be release of Housing Starts and the Philadelphia Fed Business Outlook Survey. The number in this regional manufacturing survey will be correlated and compared against Wednesday’s Industrial Production report.
The earnings season is starting to wind down. Earnings announcements are predictable volatility events providing trading opportunity. It is important to reduce the number of surprise which may occur in any trading campaign. Confirm the date and time of any company’s earnings announcement before trading any earnings announcement strategy. The most accurate source of this information is the company’s investor relations website. The earnings highlights this week, for widely held and actively traded stocks, are Teva Pharmaceutical, Noble Energy, Restaurants International, Scorpio Tankers, Rent-A-Center, and Flowers Foods.
“Every noble acquisition is attended with its risks; he who fears to encounter the one must not expect to obtain the other.” – Pietro Metastasio

Major indexes hovered around unchanged at the end of Friday’s trade. The closing prices for the week did not reflect the market’s defensive posture prior to Friday. The indexes responded negatively to President Trump’s bellicose trade talk, while showing no response to Wednesday’s FOMC announcement. The percentage change for the major indexes from the Friday recovery are as follows: DJIA + 0.94%, SPX +0.58%, NDX +0.27%, RUT +1.50%, and the OEX + 0.75%.
Friday’s rally was the result of stronger than expected job growth and President Trump’s announcement he was going to investigate a roll back of Dodd-Frank regulations. The market is starting to show interday and intraday movement. The movement is generally in response to unscheduled Presidential Executive Orders, ruminations, and tweets. These responses to President Trump’s declaration are viewed by many of increased future market volatility.

The VIX remains under pressure. The VIX and associated products showed minimally lower volatility levels for the week. The volatility levels were significantly higher before Friday’s market rally. On Friday, the VIX was down 0.96 or just over 8%, The VIX still appears to be planted in a new. lower trading range. Puts in the S&P 500 continue to trade at historically low levels.
A review of Livevol Pro time and sales uncovered a large VIX calendar spread trading at the end of day on Thursday. The spread was 135,000 contracts. The diagonal calendar spread included the purchase of one monthly March 17C against the sale of one monthly April 21C. The impact of potential executive orders will continue to overshadow a soft week for economic reports. The major reports being released is International Trade before Tuesday’s market open. The other domestic reports released this week elicit yawns for most market observers. Economic reports from Asia and Europe will focus on merchandise trade and industrial production.
The earnings season continues in full force despite earnings announcements from over 67% of S&P 500 companies.
The earnings highlights this week, for widely held and actively traded stocks, are Hasbro, Randgold Resources, Tyson Foods, Michael Kors, General Motors, Buffalo Wild Wings, Panera Bread, Zillow, Humana, Prudential Financial, Whole Foods Market, Cummins, Kellogg, Dunkin Brands, Regeneron, Expedia, NVIDIA, Verisign and Yelp.
Data Sources for earnings: Livevol Core and OptionVue8
