John Neal of PTI Securities & Futures and Marty Kearney of the CBOE join us to talk ‘buy the dip’ strategies and today’s markets. Kevin Riordan of Capital Trading Group and Kathy Dervin are in-studio discussing the Eric Garner situation, the Bears’ loss to Dallas on Thursday Night Football and much more. John Neal

John Neal directs PTI Securities’ Glendale, Arizona office serving the firm’s clients in the Phoenix metro area and across the Western U.S. He oversees day-to-day operations, including client services, investor education, staff management and marketing. John has more than 12 years of management experience in the securities and financial services industry. He joined PTI Securities in 2003 in this role. Prior to that time, he was a branch manager with Phoenix area firms, Granite Capital Management and, most recently, Independent Financial Management. A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, John earned a bachelor’s degree in international management from Arizona State University in Tempe. Away from work, John enjoys reading, live music and outdoor activities. He also volunteers with the St. Vincent De Paul Society and the Lupus Foundation of America. Married with two children, John and his family live in Peoria, Arizona.

Marty Kearney

Mr. Kearney is the co-author of Understanding LEAPS®, published by McGraw-Hill, released in September of 2002 and a contributing author of Options: Essential Concepts and Strategies (3rd edition), edited by The Options Institute, the educational arm of the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE). Mr. Kearney began his long association with the CBOE when he became an independent Market Maker in early 1981. Mr. Kearney traded equity options full time on the trading floor until 1992 and periodically thereafter until 1996. In early 1992 he became a founding partner and Registered Options Principal of a brokerage firm based in Chicago. Mr. Kearney’s responsibilities included development and implementation of hedging and trading strategies using listed options for their institutional clients as well as their retail investors. Mr. Kearney authored a weekly strategy letter for over four years, and composed the daily comments on the firms’ website, which he helped develop. He has been a regular contributor to many news services including Reuters, Group W, The CBS Radio Network, Derivatives Week, BARRON’S, FORTUNE, Ticker Magazine, Stock Futures and Options, CNBC, Bloomberg, NPR and others. Mr. Kearney served on various committees at the CBOE, including the Arbitration Committee from 1984 to 1996. Prior to joining the CBOE Mr. Kearney was a marketing director for NCR Corporation. Mr. Kearney is a graduate of St. Mary’s University (MN), BS, 1971, and pursued his MBA at Lake Forest Graduate School of Management. In 2006 he completed a 3-year SII/SIA program at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. At The Options Institute his duties include helping brokers develop new business with conservative option strategy such as covered- writing and portfolio hedging. He also trains brokerage firms’ compliance department staff.

Kevin Riordan

Director of Research, Capital Trading Group

Kevin Riordan began his career in the futures industry in 1984, working his way through Loyola University while on the floor of the Chicago Board of Trade. Since becoming a futures broker in 1990, Kevin has worked with thousands of clients and developed an excellent understanding of many technical trading methods and techniques. Scott Nelson

Scott Nelson is Legum Professor of History at the College of William and Mary. His first book, Iron Confederacies, explored the birth of the first modern corporation – the Southern Railway – and its outsized influence in cementing the inequalities of the modern South. Nelson’s second book, Steel Drivin’ Man, explores the real life and legend of railway hero John Henry. Published by Oxford University Press in 2006, it won four national prizes including Merle Curti Prize for the best book in US Social and Cultural History and the National Award for Arts Writing.

Nelson’s latest book, A Nation of Deadbeats: An Uncommon History of America’s Financial Disasters, was published by Knopf in 2012, and received favorable reviews in The Economist, The New York Times Magazine,and was featured on NPR’s Marketplace and BBC World Service. Business Week named it a best business book of 2012. He is at work on an international history for the years between the panic of 1873 and World War I tentatively entitled Four Horsemen of the Liberal Apocalypse: Freud, Chekhov, Moody, & Luxemburg.
